Archival Overview
Master landscape painter of the Heidelberg School whose sun-drenched pastoral masterworks, including 'Golden Summer, Eaglemont' and 'The Purple Noon's Transparent Might', defined Australia's visual light.
Biographical Record
Sir Arthur Streeton was born on April 8, 1867, near Geelong, Victoria. Joining Tom Roberts and Charles Conder at the Eaglemont artists' camp overlooking the Yarra River, Streeton possessed an unmatched instinct for capturing the blazing Australian light, bleached dry grasses, and cobalt summer skies.
In 1889, his Golden Summer, Eaglemont won an honorable mention at the Paris Salon—the first Australian-born artist to receive this accolade. In 1896, perched atop the Hawkesbury River, he painted The Purple Noon's Transparent Might. During World War I, he served as an official war artist in France, and was knighted in 1937 for services to Australian art.
