Archival Overview
Ingenious French-Canadian inventor whose 1925 rotary snowblower mechanized winter road clearance across the snowbound northern hemisphere.
Biographical Record
Arthur Sicard was a Quebec inventor and mechanic from an agricultural family in Saint-Léonard. Inspired in his youth by observing agricultural threshing machines that scooped grain and blew straw aside, Sicard conceived the idea of adapting rotary augers to clear heavy Canadian snowdrifts from impassable streets.
After decades of tireless experimentation, Sicard completed the "Sicard Snow Remover Snowblower" in 1925, mounting a four-wheel-drive truck with front rotating blades and an ejection chute that hurled snow over ninety feet. In 1927, Montreal purchased his machines, revolutionizing municipal winter maintenance, runway snow clearance, and highway mobility throughout cold climates.
