Biographical Record
Arthur Cayley (1821–1895) practiced law for fourteen years before becoming Sadlerian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge University. In 1858, he published 'A Memoir on the Theory of Matrices', introducing matrices as independent algebraic entities with their own rules of addition and non-commutative multiplication.
He proved the Cayley-Hamilton theorem, stating that every square matrix satisfies its own characteristic polynomial equation. Cayley also introduced abstract group theory through multiplication tables and generalized projective geometry to multidimensional spaces.
