Biographical Record
Arne Emil Jacobsen was born in Copenhagen on February 11, 1902. Graduating from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1927, Jacobsen synthesized Le Corbusier's functionalism with organic Nordic elegance, winning international acclaim for Bellevue Beach and Aarhus City Hall.
In 1960, he completed Copenhagen's SAS Royal Hotel—the world's first designer hotel—personally designing the building, lighting, textiles, cutlery, and the sculpted curvilinear Egg and Swan armchairs. His minimalist Series 7 and Ant chairs sold tens of millions of units worldwide, making Danish modern design globally famous.
