Archival Overview
Legendary Danish architect and furniture designer whose holistic modernist works include the SAS Royal Hotel, St Catherine's College Oxford, and iconic chairs like The Egg, The Swan, and Series 7.
Biographical Record
Arne Emil Jacobsen was born on February 11, 1902, in Copenhagen. Graduating from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1927, he was deeply inspired by Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe, and Gunnar Asplund, pioneering international functionalism in Denmark.
Jacobsen believed in the 'total work of art' (Gesamtkunstwerk). For the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen (1956–1960), he designed not only the skyscraper itself, but also all interior details, textiles, cutlery, door handles, and legendary organic seating: The Egg and The Swan chairs. His bent plywood Series 7 and Ant chairs became the most commercially successful chairs in design history.
