Archival Overview
Pioneering French-Canadian microbiologist who championed the BCG tuberculosis vaccine in North America and built Quebec's premier infectious disease institute.
Biographical Record
Armand Frappier was an eminent physician and microbiologist who dedicated his career to public health and immunology in Quebec. Having lost his mother and brother to tuberculosis, he traveled to the Pasteur Institute in Paris to study under Albert Calmette and Camille Guérin, mastering the production of the Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine.
Returning to Montreal, Frappier established large-scale, safe BCG vaccine manufacturing and vaccination programs across Canada. In 1938, he founded the Institute of Microbiology and Hygiene of Montreal (renamed Institut Armand-Frappier in his honor), leading the eradication of epidemic tuberculosis and pioneering polio and influenza vaccination.
