Archival Overview
Iconic French actress whose stinging Parisian wit, distinct working-class accent, and immortal exclamation 'Atmosphère! Atmosphère! Est-ce que j'ai une gueule d'atmosphère?!' in Hôtel du Nord made her an immortal legend of French cinema.
Biographical Record
A factory worker, secretary, and fashion model in her youth, she adopted the stage name Arletty at the Théâtre des Capucines. Collaborating with director Marcel Carné and poet Jacques Prévert, her streetwise Parisian charm ('gouaille') electrified classic 1930s cinema.
Her performances as Raymonde in Hôtel du Nord (1938), Dominique in Les Visiteurs du soir (1942), and the enigmatic Garance in Les Enfants du paradis (1945) defined poetic realism. Arrested at the Liberation for her romantic affair with German officer Hans-Jürgen Soehring, she defiantly retorted: 'Mon cœur est français, mais mon cul est international!'.
