Arkhip Kuindzhi (1841–1910 CE) rose from an impoverished orphaned shepherd in Mariupol to become a wealthy professor at the Saint Petersburg Academy, secretly funding young artists.

His 1880 exhibition of Moonlit Night on the Dnieper was shown alone in a darkened room under a single beam of electric light, causing block-long lines of stunned spectators who suspected hidden lamps behind the canvas.
