Archival Overview
Ancient Greek philosopher from Cyrene and prominent pupil of Socrates who founded the Cyrenaic school, articulating an influential philosophical framework centered on rational sensory hedonism and mastery over desire.
Biographical Record
Traveling from Cyrene to Athens to study under Socrates, Aristippus developed an original moral philosophy positing that immediate bodily pleasure, guided by practical reason and self-possession, represents the supreme good for human life.
Unlike vulgar hedonists, Aristippus emphasized that true pleasure requires intellectual autonomy and emotional freedom from circumstance, famously stating that he possessed his desires rather than being possessed by them. He returned to Cyrene where he trained his daughter Arete to continue the school.
