Biographical Record
Aristarchus of Samos (c. 310–230 BCE) was a visionary thinker who dared to overturn geocentric dogma. In his surviving treatise On the Sizes and Distances of the Sun and Moon, he used geometric trigonometry during lunar eclipses and half-moons to calculate planetary distances.
Archimedes recorded in The Sand Reckoner that Aristarchus hypothesized that the fixed stars and the Sun remain unmoved, that the Earth revolves around the Sun in the circumference of a circle, and that the sphere of fixed stars is incomparably larger than traditionally believed. His heliocentric hypothesis was so radical that Cleanthes the Stoic demanded he be tried for impiety.
