Biographical Record
Arete was personally educated by her father Aristippus in Socratic dialogue and Cyrenaic hedonism. Upon his passing, she assumed directorship of the school in Cyrene, lecturing extensively on ethics, epistemology, and physical philosophy.
Celebrated throughout the Greek world for her intellectual rigor and virtue, she educated her son Aristippus the Younger—known as Metrodidaktos (Mother-Taught)—who formalized Cyrenaic doctrine. Her tomb in Cyrene bore an epitaph praising her luminous wisdom and dignity.
