Archival Overview
Revolutionary bard and composer of the Persian Constitutional Revolution whose stirring musical tasnifs mobilized millions for national freedom.
Biographical Record
Abolqassem Aref Qazvini was born in Qazvin and mastered classical Persian vocal radif and calligraphy. When the Constitutional Revolution erupted in 1906, he dedicated his voice and poetry entirely to the popular struggle, transforming the traditional romantic tasnif (ballad) into an electrifying vehicle for political protest and anti-imperialist mobilization.
Aref performed his revolutionary ballads to thousands in packed concert halls in Tehran, reducing audiences to tears with his immortal composition 'Az Khun-e Javanan-e Vatan Laleh Damideh' (From the Blood of the Nation's Youth, Tulips Have Blossomed), written after constitutionalist martyrs fell. Exiled to Hamadan in his final years, he died in poverty, a legendary symbol of incorruptible patriotism.
