"Give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it, and I shall move the world."

Archival Overview

The preeminent mathematician and physical scientist of antiquity. Formulated hydrostatic buoyancy, the lever, the screw pump, calculated accurate bounds for pi, and designed ingenious war machines to defend Syracuse.

Biographical Record

Archimedes made foundational advances in geometry, calculus (the method of exhaustion), and mechanics. His discovery of hydrostatic principles while stepping into a bath led to his famous exclamation "Eureka!" (I have found it!).

During the Second Punic War, his defensive artillery held Roman fleets at bay for over two years. When Syracuse finally fell in 212 BCE, he was slain by a Roman soldier while contemplating geometric diagrams drawn in the sand.
