Biographical Record
Aram Khachaturian was born on June 6, 1903, in Tiflis to an Armenian bookbinder family. Moving to Moscow in 1921, he entered the Gnessin State Musical College and Moscow Conservatory, studying under Nikolai Myaskovsky. Khachaturian fused Eastern melodic idioms, Caucasian folk instrumentation, and lush orchestral polyphony.
His 1942 ballet Gayane, featuring the electrifying Sabre Dance, and his 1954 heroic ballet Spartacus became world classics. Alongside Prokofiev and Shostakovich, he formed the triumvirate of Soviet classical masters, serving as professor at Moscow Conservatory and conducting his works worldwide.
