Archival Overview
Alexandrian scholar and chief librarian of the Great Library of Alexandria, author of the Argonautica, the only surviving Hellenistic epic poem, which profoundly influenced Virgil's Aeneid.
Biographical Record
Apollonius studied under Callimachus in Ptolemaic Alexandria before succeeding Zenodotus as director (Prostates) of the Mouseion and Great Library under Ptolemy III Euergetes, also serving as royal tutor to the heir apparent.
His four-book epic poem, the Argonautica, reimagined the voyage of Jason and the Golden Fleece, introducing psychological interiority, romantic passion, and geographical cataloging to classical verse, directly inspiring Virgil's depiction of Dido in the Aeneid.
