Muhammad Anwar el-Sadat was an Egyptian politician and military officer who served as the third President of Egypt from 1970 until his assassination in 1981. After leading Egypt in the 1973 October War to regain the Sinai Peninsula, he took the historic step of visiting Jerusalem and signing the Camp David Accords, winning the 1978 Nobel Peace Prize.
