Kanji 'Antonio' Inoki (1943–2022) was discovered in Brazil by Rikidozan and became one of Asia's most charismatic athletic figures. In 1972, he founded New Japan Pro-Wrestling, popularizing 'Strong Style'—a martial arts style emphasizing realistic strikes, submissions, and fighting spirit (Toukon).

On June 26, 1976, Inoki fought World Heavyweight Boxing Champion Muhammad Ali at Tokyo's Nippon Budokan in a groundbreaking precursor to modern MMA seen by an estimated 1.4 billion viewers worldwide. Elected to the Japanese House of Councillors, he also conducted daring hostage diplomacy in Iraq in 1990.
