Brazilian composer who was the first New World opera composer to achieve triumphant success in Europe, renowned for his 1870 opera Il Guarany staged at La Scala in Milan.

Biographical Record

Supported by Emperor Dom Pedro II, Antonio Carlos Gomes (1836–1896) studied at the Milan Conservatory. In March 1870, his opera 'Il Guarany', based on Jose de Alencar's romantic novel of indigenous Brazilian love and heroism, premiered to thunderous applause at La Scala.

Giuseppe Verdi famously hailed Gomes as a genius who began where others leave off. Gomes composed several other successful Italianate operas ('Fosca', 'Salvator Rosa', 'Lo Schiavo') before returning to Brazil to direct the Belem Conservatory.
