Antonio Canova (1757–1822 CE) was a stonecutter's son from Possagno who rose to become the undisputed sculptor of Europe, working for popes, Napoleon Bonaparte, and British aristocrats.

Famous for his polished, translucent marble surfaces that simulated living warm flesh, he was dispatched by the Papacy in 1815 to recover Italian art treasures looted by Napoleon from Paris.
