"Independence is not a gift from a departing master; it is the natural birthright of free men and women."

Archival Overview

Legendary anti-colonial hero who in 1953 moved the historic motion for Nigeria's independence, edited 'The Southern Nigerian Defender' at age 21, and led the NADECO struggle.

Biographical Record

Anthony Eromosele Enahoro was born on July 22, 1923, in Uromi, Edo State. Educated at King's College, Lagos, he was appointed editor of Nnamdi Azikiwe's newspaper The Southern Nigerian Defender at just twenty-one years of age, becoming the youngest newspaper editor in Nigerian history and suffering multiple colonial imprisonments for sedition.

On March 31, 1953, as a member of the Federal House of Representatives, Enahoro moved the epoch-making motion demanding 'that this House accepts as a primary political objective the attainment of self-government for Nigeria in 1956', initiating the constitutional countdown to 1960 independence. In the 1990s, he emerged as Chairman of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), spearheading underground resistance against military dictatorship.
