Archival Overview
Supreme chivalric hero of pre-Islamic Arabia, born an enslaved outcast who won his freedom through valor, immortalized in his golden Mu'allaqah.
Biographical Record
Antarah ibn Shaddad al-Absi was born to an Arab nobleman of the Banu Abs and Zabiba, an enslaved Ethiopian woman captured in war. Treated as an outcast and relegated to herding camels, his astonishing physical prowess and courage during an enemy raid forced his father to grant him freedom and recognition as a warrior.
Antarah became the supreme champion of his tribe in the War of Dahis and Ghabra, his immortal romance with his cousin Abla inspiring the epic folk romance Sirat Antar. His magnificent Mu'allaqah—opening with 'Have the poets left a single spot unpatched?'—seamlessly unites ferocious battlefield description with sublime romantic devotion to Abla.
