Archival Overview
European-Algerian patriot who served as clandestine bomb liaison agent for the FLN in the Battle of Algiers, endured horrific prison abuse, and lived as a proud Algerian citizen.
Biographical Record
Annie Steiner was born into a European family in Hadjeret En-Nouss near Cherchell. Deeply moved by the social injustice and systemic oppression inflicted upon Algerian Muslims, she joined the FLN network in Algiers under Yacef Saadi and Dr. Daniel Timsit, transporting secret correspondence and materials.
Arrested in October 1956, she was imprisoned in the notorious Barberousse Prison where she composed moving prison poems weeping for her guillotined Algerian comrades. Upon independence in 1962, she proudly chose Algerian citizenship, serving in the Ministry of Justice until her death in 2021, revered across Algeria as 'Mother Annie'.
