Archival Overview
Cyrenaic philosopher from Libya who reformed hedonist ethics by championing altruism, friendship, and patriotism, famously paying the ransom to liberate Plato from slavery in Aegina.
Biographical Record
Anniceris was a noble philosopher of Cyrene. When Plato was betrayed by the tyrant Dionysius of Syracuse and sold into slavery at the slave market on the island of Aegina in 387 BCE, Anniceris recognized the philosopher and purchased his freedom for twenty silver minas, refusing repayment from Plato's friends.
He founded the Annicerean branch of the Cyrenaic school, refining earlier selfish hedonism by teaching that a wise person should gladly endure hardship and even risk life for a friend or for the defense of one's homeland.
