Archival Overview

Brilliant Quebec poet and novelist whose chilling novella Le Torrent, poetry collection Le Tombeau des rois, and historical novel Kamouraska earned her three Governor General's Awards and France's Prix des Libraires.

Biographical Record

Cousin of poet Saint-Denys Garneau, Hébert grew up surrounded by literary refinement, publishing her volcanic collection Le Torrent in 1950, which shocked conservative readers by exposing psychological guilt and matriarchal repression in rural Quebec.

Her poetry in Le Tombeau des rois (1953) attained pure, incandescent beauty, while her 1970 gothic novel Kamouraska, based on a 19th-century murder on the St. Lawrence, was adapted into a celebrated film by Claude Jutra. She was an elected member of the Royal Society of Canada and Académie Mallarmé.
