Biographical Record
Aníbal Carmelo Troilo was born on July 11, 1914, in the Abasto neighborhood of Buenos Aires. Persuading his mother to buy him his first bandoneon at age ten, he began playing in silent movie theatres at twelve, forming his own historic orchestra in 1937 at the Marabú cabaret.
Troilo was the living soul of the Golden Age of Tango. His orchestra featured legendary vocalists like Roberto Goyeneche and Francisco Fiorentino, while young Astor Piazzolla served as his arranger and bandoneonist. Partnering with lyricist Homero Manzi, Troilo composed immortal tangos including 'Sur' (1948), 'Barrio de tango', and 'Responso'. In Argentina, his birthday on July 11 is celebrated annually as National Bandoneon Day.
