Angel Nieto (1947–2017) moved from Zamora to the Vallecas barrio of Madrid in childhood and swept workshop floors at Bultaco to earn a motorcycle apprenticeship. Dominating the light 50cc and 125cc Grand Prix classes on Derbi, Kreidler, Bultaco, Minarelli, and Garelli, his racecraft and drafting tactical intelligence were supreme.

Nieto amassed ninety Grand Prix victories between 1969 and 1985, third on the all-time list behind Giacomo Agostini and Valentino Rossi. His charisma and mainstream stardom turned motorcycle racing into a Spanish national passion, inspiring future champions like Marc Marquez, Jorge Lorenzo, and Dani Pedrosa.
