Archival Overview
First democratically elected President of the Central African Republic (1993–2003) following multiparty elections, having previously served as an agronomist and Prime Minister.
Biographical Record
Ange-Felix Patasse was born on January 25, 1937, in Paoua, Ouham-Pende. Educated in agronomy in Paris and Toulouse, he served as a skilled agricultural engineer in the Ministry of Agriculture before becoming Prime Minister under Jean-Bedel Bokassa.
Resigning in protest against imperial extravagance, Patasse founded the Movement for the Liberation of the Central African People (MLPC) in 1979. Enduring years of exile and political persecution, he won the historic 1993 democratic presidential election—the first peaceful democratic transfer of power in CAR history. Re-elected in 1999, his tenure was marked by complex economic turbulence until he was overthrown in 2003.
