Biographical Record
Andy Samuel Griffith rose to fame with his Southern comedic monologue 'What It Was, Was Football' in 1953 and delivered a searing dramatic performance as manipulative populist demagogue Larry 'Lonesome' Rhodes in Elia Kazan's film masterpiece 'A Face in the Crowd' (1957).
In 1960, he launched 'The Andy Griffith Show', set in the fictional idyllic town of Mayberry, North Carolina. The show ran for eight seasons never dropping below the top seven ratings, celebrating community decency and folk wisdom.
