Biographical Record
Born Ramboasalama, Andrianampoinimerina (c. 1745–1810) overthrew his despotic uncle in 1787 to become king of Ambohimanga. Through ingenious diplomacy, marriage alliances, and military organization, he reunited the four divided quarters of Imerina and captured Antananarivo in 1794.
He constructed extensive irrigated rice terraces in the Betsimitatatra plain, promulgated a comprehensive legal code, and established the 'Fokonolona' (village council) system. His sacred fortified royal hill of Ambohimanga is a UNESCO World Heritage site. On his deathbed, he famously tasked his son Radama with reaching the sea.
