Andrey Kolmogorov (1903–1987) transformed probability from empirical observations into an exact branch of measure theory with his 1933 monograph 'Foundations of the Theory of Probability'. In the 1940s, he formulated the K41 theory of hydrodynamic turbulence, explaining energy cascades across turbulent fluids.
He co-developed the Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser (KAM) theorem governing the stability of planetary orbits and introduced Kolmogorov complexity in information theory. A passionate educator, he created Moscow's famous boarding school for gifted young mathematicians.
