Archival Overview

Legendary Belgian resistance heroine code-named 'Dédée' who founded the WWII Comet Line escape network, personally leading over 118 downed Allied airmen across the snowy Pyrenees into neutral Spain.

Biographical Record

Trained as a commercial artist and Red Cross nurse, De Jongh organized an escape route for Allied airmen following the Nazi occupation in 1940. In August 1941, she appeared at the British consulate in Bilbao with two British officers, winning British MI9 funding for the 'Comet Line'.

Over two years, she made 32 perilous crossings on foot across the Pyrenees mountains with escaping aviators. Betrayed and arrested in 1943, she survived the horrors of Ravensbrück and Mauthausen concentration camps. She was awarded the George Medal, US Medal of Freedom, and created a Belgian countess.
