Archival Overview
One of the greatest comic book cartoonists in history, cornerstone of the Marcinelle School, who revitalized Spirou & Fantasio, created the legendary Marsupilami and Gaston Lagaffe, and penned the caustic Idées Noires.
Biographical Record
Mentored by Jijé at the Marcinelle workshop alongside Morris and Will, Franquin took over Spirou & Fantasio in 1946, introducing dynamic kinetic drawing and unforgettable characters such as the yellow spotted Marsupilami and the villain Zorglub.
In 1957, he created Gaston Lagaffe, the gentle, eco-pacifist office anti-hero whose inventive laziness enchanted generations. In his late masterpiece Idées Noires (1977), Franquin deployed pure silhouette ink to deliver savage, brilliant dark satire against militarism and ecological destruction.
