Archival Overview
The father of modern Belgian cinema who pioneered cinematic 'magic realism' in masterpieces including De man die zijn haar kort liet knippen (The Man Who Had His Hair Cut Short) and Rendezvous at Bray.
Biographical Record
Studying Germanic philology and law at the Université Libre de Bruxelles and piano at the Royal Conservatory, Delvaux directed television documentaries before directing his 1965 feature debut De man die zijn haar kort liet knippen, based on Johan Daisne's novel.
His haunting films, including Un soir, un train (1968, starring Yves Montand) and Rendez-vous à Bray (1971), created an unmistakable Belgian aesthetic where mundane everyday reality seamlessly blended with dreams, memory, and supernatural mystery. The Magritte Awards of Belgian cinema were established in his honor.
