"A lightning strike across the night, illuminating our mountain poetry with modern harmonies."

Archival Overview

Visionary reformer of modern Amazigh song who founded the legendary group Ousman in 1975, introducing polyphonic harmonies, acoustic guitars, and modern poetic arrangements to Moroccan music.

Biographical Record

Ammouri Mbarek grew up an orphan in Taroudant, finding solace in music. In the early 1970s, he revolutionized Amazigh musical culture by creating Ousman (Lightnings), the first band to adapt traditional Tamazight poetry to modern folk-rock orchestration with guitars, violins, and flutes.

Performing at Paris's Olympia in 1977, Mbarek brought Amazigh culture into the international modern music sphere. His solo albums across four decades earned him status as a national cultural hero and pioneer of contemporary Maghrebi world music.
