Archival Overview

Ninth Pharaoh of the Eighteenth Dynasty whose nearly four-decade reign was the artistic and economic zenith of ancient Egypt.

Biographical Record

Amenhotep III, celebrated as 'Amenhotep the Magnificent', ruled ancient Egypt at the absolute summit of its wealth, artistic brilliance, and international prestige during the Eighteenth Dynasty. Ascending the throne as a teenager, he reigned over an empire overflowing with Nubian gold and Levant tribute, presiding over an unbroken era of peace that allowed state resources to be poured into monumental art and diplomacy.

Amenhotep conducted statecraft through diplomatic marriages and correspondence recorded on the famous Amarna Letters. Alongside his influential Great Royal Wife Queen Tiye, Amenhotep erected unprecedented architectural complexes: the magnificent temple of Luxor, the colossal Third Pylon and colonnades at Karnak, and his vast mortuary temple at Kom el-Hettan, fronted by the famed sixty-foot-tall quartzite Colossi of Memnon. His reign represented the sublime classical apex of Egyptian sculpture, celebrated for its serene naturalism, which set the stage for his son Akhenaten's revolutionary Amarna period.
