Archival Overview
Vanguard Cuban modernist painter whose distinctive still lifes with heavy black outlines, colonial architectural arabesques, and luminous stained-glass palettes redefined 20th-century Latin American art.
Biographical Record
Amelia Peláez was born in Yaguajay on January 5, 1896. After graduating from the San Alejandro Academy, she spent seven transformative years in Paris studying with Alexandra Exter, mastering synthetic cubism and dynamic spatial organization.
Returning to her family home in La Víbora, Havana, in 1934, Peláez translated cubist discipline into a lavishly Cuban visual language: vibrant tropical fruits, colonial arches, and fanlight windows (medio punto vitrales). Her monumental ceramic mural on the facade of the Hotel Habana Libre stands as a landmark of modern Caribbean design.
