Archival Overview
Wise and charismatic Pharaoh of the Twenty-Sixth (Saite) Dynasty whose forty-four-year reign witnessed the final flourishing of native Egyptian economic prosperity, artistic renaissance, and deep diplomatic alliances with Greek states.
Biographical Record
Originally a general under Apries, Amasis was proclaimed pharaoh by mutinous native troops in 570 BCE. A brilliant statesman described with admiration by Herodotus, he established the Greek trade emporium of Naucratis on the Canopic branch of the Nile.
Amasis formed strategic alliances with Polycrates of Samos, Croesus of Lydia, and Cyrene, adorning Egypt's northern temples with colossal granite monoliths and guiding the country through its last great era of native independent peace before the Persian conquest.
