Archival Overview

First Secretary-General of the Algerian Communist Party, key drafter of the 1956 Soummam Platform alongside Ramdane Abane, and author of 'Le Meilleur Combat'.

Biographical Record

Amar Ouzegane was born in the Casbah of Algiers and became the first indigenous Secretary-General of the Algerian Communist Party (PCA) in 1934. Expelled in 1947 for advocating full national independence over French party directives, he aligned firmly with the revolutionary nationalist struggle.

In 1956, Ramdane Abane enlisted Ouzegane's brilliant analytical pen to draft the historic political platform of the Soummam Congress. Author of 'Le Meilleur Combat' (1962), he served as independent Algeria's first Minister of Agriculture and a leading journalistic commentator.
