Archival Overview
Beloved Algerian Chaabi maestro and ascetic street philosopher whose soul-stirring mandole improvisations, humble Casbah lifestyle, and refusal of commercial stardom made him a sacred folk legend.
Biographical Record
Amar Aït Zaï, universally revered as Amar Ezzahi ('The Joyful One'), moved as a child from the mountains of Kabylie to the Casbah of Algiers. Mentored by Sheikh Kaddour Bachtobji and Boudjemâa El Ankis, he recorded his first major successes in 1968 with 'Ya Dha El Adhra'.
Renowned for his complete indifference to fame and money, Ezzahi refused to record commercial albums for over three decades, performing exclusively at neighborhood weddings and working-class celebrations. His funeral in December 2016 drew tens of thousands of ordinary Algerians in an unprecedented national outpouring of love.
