Archival Overview

Greatest admiral in Spanish history who never lost a battle across a fifty-year naval career, commanded the reserve galleys at the Battle of Lepanto, and conquered the Azores at Ponta Delgada.

Biographical Record

Born in Granada to a distinguished naval family, Alvaro de Bazan (1526–1588) was knighted into the Order of Santiago as a child. In October 1571, during the historic Battle of Lepanto against the Ottoman Empire, Bazan commanded the thirty-ship reserve squadron, repeatedly charging into critical breaches to save Don John of Austria's flagship and turning the tide to Christian victory.

In 1582, off the Azores, he won the Battle of Ponta Delgada against a French-Portuguese fleet, executing the first deep-sea fleet artillery engagement in Atlantic naval history. King Philip II entrusted him with designing and organizing the Spanish Armada against England, but Bazan died of typhus in Lisbon months before it sailed.
