On April 1, 1957, in front of 20,000 fans at the Vel' d'Hiv in Paris, Halimi defeated reigning champion Mario D'Agata to become World Bantamweight Champion. In November 1957, he unified the undisputed world title by defeating American champion Raul Macias in Los Angeles, celebrated as one of the greatest pugilists born in North Africa.
