Archival Overview
Lyric poet of French Romanticism whose 1820 collection Méditations poétiques launched the Romantic movement with 'Le Lac', and who served as head of the Provisional Government proclaiming the Second French Republic in 1848.
Biographical Record
Born in Mâcon, Lamartine experienced tragic love with Julie Charles along the shores of Lac du Bourget in Savoy. In 1820, his Méditations poétiques, featuring the immortal lyric 'Le Lac' ('Ô temps! suspends ton vol...'), conquered European readers with melodic spirituality.
Elected to parliament as a progressive orator, Lamartine championed the abolition of slavery. In February 1848, he led the revolution that overthrew King Louis-Philippe, proclaimed the Second Republic at the Paris Hôtel de Ville, defended the tricolour flag against the red flag, and signed the decree abolishing slavery in French colonies.
