Biographical Record

Alluri Sitarama Raju was born in Andhra Pradesh and renounced worldly wealth at an early age to live among the indigenous Adivasi communities of the Eastern Ghats. Deeply angered by the Madras Forest Act of 1882 which criminalized traditional podu (shifting) cultivation, he organized tribal resistance.

Employing traditional bows, arrows, and captured rifles, Raju led daring raids on British police stations at Chintapalli, Rampachodavaram, and Dammanapalli. Trapped by the Assam Rifles in May 1924, he was tied to a tree and summarily executed without trial, revered as a folk deity.
