Biographical Record
Ali Yata was born in Tangier and graduated in Arabic literature from the University of Bordeaux. In 1945, he became the first Moroccan secretary-general of the Moroccan Communist Party (PCM), demanding immediate national independence and unity with Sultan Mohammed ben Youssef.
Repeatedly arrested, imprisoned, and exiled by French authorities, he adapted Marxist principles to Moroccan national reality, founding the Party of Progress and Socialism (PPS) in 1974. Elected deputy for Casablanca in 1977, he was an ardent defender of Moroccan territorial integrity and working-class legislation until his tragic death in an auto accident in 1997.
