Archival Overview
Saadian military architect and governor who supervised the construction of the monumental eight-kilometer rammed-earth (pisé) walls and defensive bastions of Taroudant, which survive intact today.
Biographical Record
Ali ibn Tamim was the master builder and military governor commissioned by Saadian Sultan Mohammed ash-Sheikh and his successors to transform Taroudant into an impregnable southern imperial bastion. Utilizing local reddish earth, lime, and stone, he erected the celebrated 8-kilometer circuit of ramparts fortified with 130 defensive towers and five monumental gates.
His defensive fortifications successfully preserved Taroudant as the capital of the Sous and the secure northern terminus of trans-Saharan gold caravans.
