Biographical Record
Born into a cultured musical household in the Medina of Tunis, Ali Sriti studied under Khemais Tarnane and Ahmed El Wafi at the Rachidia Institute in the 1930s. Master of both the four-string Tunisian ud 'arbi and the classical oriental oud, his touch, phrasing, and modal improvisation (taqsim) were unmatched.
For five decades, he headed the Department of Classical String Instruments at the National Conservatory of Tunis, transcribing oral Malouf modes with scientific precision. His collaboration with world-renowned jazz-oud virtuoso Anouar Brahem bridged Maghrebi modal tradition with modern world music.
