Archival Overview
4th President of Somalia (1991–1997) who assumed power following the overthrow of military dictator Siad Barre, navigating devastating civil warfare against rival faction leader General Mohamed Farrah Aidid in Mogadishu.
Biographical Record
Ali Mahdi Muhammad was born in Jowhar, Middle Shabelle, and worked as an independent entrepreneur and member of the Somali parliament in the 1960s before the 1969 military coup led by Siad Barre. Imprisoned for political dissent, he subsequently built a prosperous business career in Mogadishu, owning the prominent Makka al-Mukarama Hotel.
In 1990, Mahdi was a prominent signer of the Manifesto calling on Siad Barre to resign and respect human rights. Following Barre's ouster in January 1991, the United Somali Congress (USC) proclaimed Mahdi president. However, fierce rivalry between his faction and General Mohamed Farrah Aidid triggered catastrophic civil war in Mogadishu in late 1991, dividing the city and prompting the UN and US Operation Restore Hope military interventions. In 2000, Mahdi participated constructively in the Arta peace conference in Djibouti to establish the Transitional National Government.
