Archival Overview

Iconic Algerian musician and composer whose masterpiece 'Angham El Djazair' celebrated national unity, publically lynched and hanged in Tiaret by colonial troops.

Biographical Record

Founder of the artistic ensemble Safir El Tarab in Tiaret, Ali Maâchi synthesized modern orchestral arrangements with Algerian poetic themes. His immortal 1956 musical epic Angham El Djazair traversed all regions of Algeria, demonstrating the cultural unity of the country.

As an active clandestine member of the FLN, he used his concerts to fundraise and transport messages for the freedom fighters. Kidnapped by French paratroopers on June 8, 1958, he and two companions were tortured, executed, and hung from lamp posts in Place Carnot in Tiaret, inspiring Algeria's National Artist Day.
