Biographical Record
Born Ali Ammar in Miliana, Ali La Pointe was an illiterate boxer who experienced the brutality of French colonial prisons. Recruited into the FLN by Rabah Bitat while interned at Barberousse prison, his raw courage, charisma, and intimate knowledge of the Algiers underworld made him the undisputed urban commander of the Casbah.
Under Yacef Saâdi, Ali directed urban strikes against colonial police and paramilitary death squads. For ten months, he eluded 10,000 paratroopers of General Massu's 10th Parachute Division. Refusing surrender when trapped in a false wall at 5 Rue des Abderrames, he perished alongside Hassiba Ben Bouali and Petit Omar when paratroopers detonated explosives.
