Archival Overview
Husainid Bey of Tunis whose twenty-year reign witnessed the deep bureaucratic entrenchment of the French protectorate following the 1883 Conventions of La Marsa.
Biographical Record
Ali Bey succeeded his brother Sadok Bey in October 1882 amid the aftermath of the French occupation. In June 1883, under intense pressure from French Resident-General Paul Cambon, he signed the Conventions of La Marsa, which effectively surrendered internal administrative governance to French colonial officials.
Despite his restricted powers, Ali Bey maintained traditional cultural institutions, expanded the Bardo Museum collections, and patronized religious scholars at the Great Mosque of Zaytuna until his death at his palace in La Marsa in 1902.
